Numbers is based in present day England. The main character, Jem, can see peoples death dates. Jem is someone who doesn't like to be around other people, because of her strange gift. So when Spider, a kid from her class, takes up one of her hiding spots she's a little surprised and annoyed.

Spider and Jem form a bond through the weeks to come. One day after both of them were kicked out of school, they go to the London Eye. But Jem notices peoples Numbers are a little strange. So they leave, but before they are gone something happens. The London Eye explodes behind them. Fear of being accused causes them to set off on the run. While on the run Jem and Spider's bond grows ever more.

This story starts out as being one of a young girls struggle with a gift she doesn't understand. But somehow between finding Spider and trying to avoid his ticking clock it morphs into something of love and happiness and how someone should never waste the time they have left on this earth.
